Overview

 

Kani Shawl has been registered under the Geographical Indications (GI) of Goods Act of India, having GI No. 51, Certificate No. 83 in the Class of Goods 25 as on 13th February 2006.

The Specifications for “Kani Shawl” as registered under the GI are:

1. It is hand woven, using a number of ‘Kanis’ or ‘Tujlis’ is place of a shuttle for the weft yarns, ‘Kani’ is a small eyeless wooden spoke with coloured yarn that is inserted round a specified number of warp threads as per the design.

2. Is woven in the Twill Tapestry Weave with interlocking of weft yarns at each colour joining.

3. Is woven with the help of written instructions in the form of ‘Talim’.

4. Is made of warp and weft yarns that have been dyed in varied colours following traditional methods and

    5. Is woven by traditional artisans of Kashmir.
