Willow Wicker
The craft of Willow Wicker is
relatively new as compared with the other crafts of Jammu and
Kashmir, like Carpets, Embroidery, Papier Mache and Copper work.
Presently the craft is mainly concentrated in the area of
Srinagar city, in nearby Gandherbal and in Anantnag.
The objective of the project was to
redefine the presence of willow wicker products beyond primarily
basketry and some furniture. Also, to redefine the perceived
crafty feel of willow wicker products to contemporary ,well

Khatumbandh
Khatumbandh is an art of making ceiling, by tilling small pieces of wood (preferably walnut or deodar wood) into each other in geometrical patterns, done entirely by hand without the use of nails. The wood is processed, cut into batons and panels and fixed in the ceiling in floral and geometrical designs. The uniqueness of this art is that when the ceiling is complete, it acquires a unique geometrical pattern. With fewer or no nails used at all, the ceiling can easily be disassembled and reassembled at another place.
This project is envisaged as a design development exercise involving professional designers, local artisans, manufacturers and traders engaged in the production of Khatumbandh. The scope of the project also proposes to research and identify issues, concerns and bottlenecks towards quality and commercially viable production from Kashmir, for domestic and international markets.
